Analysis

Figure 1. Temporal sampling.

Calendar plot below shows Landsat 8-9, Sentinel-2 and AVIRIS-ng acquisions for period Sep 1, 2021 through Aug 31, 2022. Colors indicate cloudcover: blue is cloud-free, red is too cloudy to be usable. Done by visual interpretation with reasonably strict threshold of acceptability. Sentinel-2 tile T10SGD; Landsat p042r036.

Note Planet data are additionally available (3m, daily revisit).

Sentinel-2: 12 of 73 cloud-free
Landsat 8-9: 8 of 35 cloud-free
AVIRIS-ng: 16 unique dates (overestimate; not full coverage on all dates)

Fig 2. Simple Temporal Mixture Model

Below. Red = annual, green = evergreen, blue = deciduous/shadow. Not shown - null (unvegetated). Linear stretch 0 to 1.

Full Area Grass Masks - Max Probability Rule

Below. White areas have maximum probability of Annual tEM.

Full Area Grass Masks - Progressive Threshold

Below. Red > 30% , Green > 50%, blue >70%. Binary masks.

Sedgwick Grass Masks - Max Probability Rule
